About
What does EST-Leaf do?
EST-Leaf measures leaf inclination and azimuth angles using your iPhone's built-in sensors. It's designed for plant scientists, agronomists, and ecologists conducting canopy structure field campaigns. Results include mean angle, Beta distribution parameters, Campbell's ฯ, and a G-function graph for radiation modelling.
Why does the app ask for location?
Location is used to record where each project was measured and to compute the current sun position for the incidence-angle calculation. Location is stored only on your device โ it is never sent to any server.
Why does the app ask for camera access?
Camera access lets you attach a photo of the plant stand to your measurement project for documentation. Photos are stored locally in your project and are never uploaded anywhere.
Where is my data stored?
All measurement data, statistics, and photos are stored locally on your device. You can export everything as CSV files to your Documents folder at any time. Deleting the app removes all data.
Frequently Asked Questions
The inclination reading seems wrong
Make sure your iPhone is held flat against the leaf surface and that the device is not near metal objects or strong magnetic fields, which can affect the compass. Calibrate the compass by moving the device in a figure-eight motion.
Where do exported CSV files go?
Files are saved to the app's Documents folder, accessible via the Files app under EST-Leaf. You can also share them directly using the Share CSV option in the app menu.
How many measurements do I need for statistics?
A minimum of two measurements is required to compute statistics. For scientifically meaningful Beta distribution fitting and G-function results, a typical campaign uses 50โ100 or more individual leaf measurements per project.
Can I remove a leaf measurement I added by mistake?
Yes โ tap the menu icon (โฏ) in the top-right corner of the Measurement screen and choose "Remove last leaf" to delete the most recently recorded entry.
